How to use Rankr: GBP Categories on Google Maps, the free Chrome extension that shows every business's Google Business Profile categories right on Google Maps.
It works in Google Chrome on a computer. Chrome on phones and tablets doesn't run extensions.
The blue Rankr icon now stays in your toolbar, so the on/off switch is one click away.
Go to google.com/maps and search for a type of business, like "plumber near me". Each result gets a row of blue category chips.
Under each business you'll see GBP categories (★ primary) and a row of chips. The first chip, solid blue with a star, is the primary category. The others are the additional categories on that business's Google Business Profile.
Click a business to open its listing. The same chips show under its name and rating, next to a Copy button. Click it and paste anywhere: you get the categories as a comma-separated list.
Search for the business by name. The extension works on any Maps search, so you can see which categories the businesses ranking above you use before you change your own.
Click the Rankr icon in your toolbar and use the Show categories on Google Maps switch. Maps updates straight away. You don't need to reload.
The extension shows exactly what Google has on that business's profile. Some businesses only set a primary category.
If you see "Couldn't copy", select the categories with your mouse and press Ctrl+C (Cmd+C on a Mac).
Google changes Maps without notice, and a change can stop the categories from showing until we update the extension. Updates install on their own. If the chips are still missing after you reload, email us and we'll look at it.
Nothing about you. It reads the category data Google Maps already loads in your browser and sends nothing to Rankr or anyone else. The only thing it saves is your on/off setting, in Chrome's own storage.
Right-click the Rankr icon in your toolbar and choose Remove from Chrome. You can also remove it from chrome://extensions.
Email hello@joinrankr.com. Tell us what you searched for on Google Maps and, if you can, attach a screenshot.
